When you think of orthodontic treatment you probably immediately think of those metal braces that look like train tracks. Although these traditional braces are still one of the most effective treatment options out there for straightening teeth, they’re not like they used to be.
How do conventional braces work?
Conventional braces work using individual brackets and archwires to move your teeth into position. Each bracket is fitted to the surface of your tooth and the archwire is slotted into these brackets. As the archwire attempts to straighten using light force from elastic bands, it gradually moves your teeth into their desired position.
How long do conventional braces take?
This depends on your orthodontic requirements and every case is different; however, you can expect conventional braces to take anywhere between 12 and 24 months.
Who are conventional braces for?
Conventional braces are suitable for all patients, from children and teens to adults. Although other orthodontic treatments, such as Invisalign, are being increasingly used, conventional braces are still an effective treatment option, particularly for the more complex cases.
Types of conventional braces
Metal braces: The traditional conventional braces use stainless steel brackets, giving that ‘train track’ look. However, these days the brackets are much smaller, making them less noticeable and more comfortable to wear. They also come in different colours.
Porcelain braces: These conventional braces use porcelain brackets which blend in with the colour of your teeth. This makes them a more aesthetically pleasing option.
